You Need to Work at an AI Company

Only if you want to make a ridiculous amount of $$ I guess

If you haven’t been following the AI rush recently, let me get you up to speed. OpenAI (who makes ChatGPT) is valued at $300B. Anthropic (a competitor) is valued at $62B. Scale AI (another hot AI startup) employees just cashed out $14B thanks to an investment by Meta (Facebook). All of these have made normal employees millionaires.

It’s not like you have to have that special of skills to work at these places. Marketing is marketing, finance is finance, sales are sales, HR is HR. Maybe it’s a bit different, but it’s mainly the same to work at those hot companies vs a Proctor and Gamble, Gap, or Colgate. The biggest difference is what your shares will be worth…

Felicis Ventures is one of the Venture Capital funds I respect the most. In their latest blog post, here’s what they had to say: “We believe dozens of $100B+ AI companies will emerge this decade (not merely $1B or $10B).” And I fully believe and agree with them. AI will change a lot of sectors and disrupt a lot of current life.

So how can you leverage this? Do what I would do (if I was looking for a new job). Work at one of these types of companies. AI is worth betting your career on, I promise.

How can you figure out which of these companies is best?

  • Look at top VC funds portfolios. Go to Lightspeed, Sequoia, Felicis, Accel, etc… and see what companies they’ve invested in.

  • Use my guide here for breaking in as a graduating student or an early career person.

  • Grow with the company. These companies are growing so fast, that they need all hands on deck.

If working at one of these AI companies doesn’t interest you much, I’d recommend playing around with different AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Lovable, and Cursor. If you can become an expert on using these tools, you will be valuable. Whether it is to get hired by one of them or doing something else with the tools. I promise you will be valuable.

I read an article recently that said that people 25 and under are already 10x better at using AI tools then people over the age of 25, because growing up with this type of tech makes the user much more knowledgeable.

This is the AI Gold Rush. Do not miss out. If there’s one thing I would tell you, it’s that.
